Connemara Hoof Wall Separation Disease is an inherited disorder where affected ponies have their hoof wall easily break away from the underlying tissue.

In severe cases they end up walking on their soles. It’s an autosomal recessive disease, meaning that it can occur in either sex and that an affected pony will have inherited one copy of the gene from each parent. Ponies that have just one copy of the gene are called carriers, and don’t show signs of the disorder.

Testing is currently available at UC Davis, but we would love to make it directly available here too. We are almost ready to go … just one more carrier sample is required!
