Breeding Overview

If you are wanting to get into breeding, there are many different routes that you can take in order to achieve your desired results.

If you have a mare that you want to breed, and that you want to carry the foal, you can either breed her through pasture mating, hand mating or artificial insemination. Click on the headings for more information on each topic.

Pasture Mating

  • Highest rate of conception
  • Requires the least amount of handling from the owner etc
  • Elevated risk of injury to stallion and mare
  • Reduced accuracy in determining conception date
Hand Mating

  • Involves the mare being placed in a breeding stall with the stallion
  • Currently the most popular form of live cover
  • Poses less risk of injury to the stallion and mare
  • Can confirm insemination through examination of the reproductive tract
Artificial Insemination

  • Allows the use of sperm from international and inaccessible stallions
  • Involves the placement of semen manually into the mares reproductive tract
  • Can use fresh, cooled or frozen semen
Embryo Transfer

  • Donor mare is impregnated and then the egg is implanted in a recipient mare
  • Allows the mare to continue competing and increases her breeding life
  • Recipient mare should be similar in size to the donor mare, cycling at the same time and well socialised
