Handling and Training

The foal should be handled by a professional or someone who is highly experienced from an early age in order to ensure that they do not develop dangerous habits around humans.

Proper handling is important both for sale purposes but also pragmatic reasons. If the foal should need to be handled for the vet, farrier or dentist or for regular check-ups, it is necessary that they are comfortable being touched all over and being near people. It is also essential for emergency situations.

This handling should be done by someone who is experienced handling young horses, including foals, as someone with less experience could teach them bad habits that could endanger the foal and those around it. If you are not experienced in this field yourself, you should consider employing someone who handles weanlings and foals professionally in order to keep everyone, including your foal safe. However, this handling should be considered in the cost and budgeted for before getting your mare pregnant.
