Pasture Mating
It has the highest rate of conception of all the methods of breeding.
A stallion is typically placed in a herd of 20-30 mares for 60-90 days. It has the highest rates of conception of all the methods of breeding and allows the mares and stallion more of a choice in the breeding process. A stallion can also be placed in a larger paddock with 1 or 2 mares for an oestrus cycle. It requires the least amount of handling from the owner or other personnel as the mare and stallion do not need to be constantly monitored during the process.
However, there is the risk of injury to the mare and stallion as they can kick out at each other. There is also a reduced accuracy in determining the date of conception, which can be used to determine the birth date and how far along the mare is. It can also take longer, as the stallion has to be with the mare for a cycle, rather than covering multiple mares during that same period.
