Worm farm for lab waste!

Today we got a new pet for the lab … and not just one, around 4000 of them! We have just installed a worm farm to help us deal some of our waste. These 4000 worms (my very Australian children call them wormos … as in Doggo, Birdo, Wormo …) will be munching their way through our paper and food waste and if we are lucky maybe even our natural rubber latex gloves.

Latex is produced by rubber trees and as a plant-based material may possibly be tasty to worms … but if only they can get fragments into their digestive systems! Just as well we are scientists because I think we might have to do some experiments to find the best way to make this work. We will let you know how it goes!
