Today in the lab!

We are using a 3D printer to make some customized equipment. This beautiful thing will be part of our gel electrophoresis equipment. The tray that we are making is held by lines of interconnected supports.

The printer we use – Kylie – is an SLA printer. SLA uses high energy laser light to catalyze a reaction that hardens a liquid resin. Yes, we have a laser!

Kylie has strict fashion rules though. Green glasses are compulsory.

We chose this type of printer because it can create high resolution water-tight objects, and resins were available with relatively high melt points.

Working in science lets you be creative as well as inquisitive!
